How Do You Fix A Computer Keyboard?
BASIC GUIDE:
Fixing A Bad Keyboard (Things To Check First)
Check if the Caps lock key works and the little light turns on. If you`re using a USB keyboard, try plugging an old keyboard into your computer and seeing if it works. If you can`t, try using another USB port for your keyboard, and if this doesn`t work, try using another keyboard. Also, sometimes if you just fiddle with the keyboard jack it might work again. Finally, make sure that your keyboard has nothing stuck in it and that there are no other USB devices connected to your computer, that may be creating a hardware conflict.
If your keyboard works but not your mouse
Refer to the Windows Shortcuts article (coming soon) for keyboard commands and try restarting your computer by going to Start, the Power Button, and Shutdown (type in the Windows Key, press the keyboard arrow right three times, click on the Up arrow key once, and press enter on Shutdown.
If your keyboard is totally stalled:
Hold the computer`s power button for 3-10 seconds to turn it off, or just manually unplug it. Please note: Don`t try to turn off your computer manually all the time as it can: damage your computer`s hardware, allow temporary files to build up in your computer system, cause a corrupted Windows registry entry (the registry records all the changes you made to your computer over time; kind of like the log file the computer refers to and the computer`s boss of how to open certain windows, applications, and more), and cause other problems to occur.
Once the computer has been off for about 8 seconds, you can safely restart it. If "Check Disk" pops up when you restart and you have Windows 2000, XP, Vista, or 7, let the program check the disks and if it finds and fixes any errors, it's probably best to check the health of your hard drive and back up your computer immediately (as there is no reason why your computer should be doing this).
If the computer has options onscreen such as Safe Mode, Last Known Good Configuration, and others, just select the option to load Windows normally.
If the computer starts in Safe Mode, a hardware or software problem may have occurred. Check for corrupt Windows files with your Windows or Recovery discs (more details in later articles), and check Device Manager (by pressing Windows Key+R, and then typing devmgmt.msc and pressing Enter) for any conflicting/broken/bad hardware drivers or software conflicts.
If the computer won't restart at all, check out the (My Computer Will Not Turn On) article on this website.
